Designer Meike van Schijndel’s Utrecht based firm Bathroom Mania! achieved notoriety with the internationally popular Kisses urinal.
This playful mouth-shaped fixture brings a hint of sexiness to the loo. Bathroom Mania! produces Kisses itself. Its other imaginative sanitary designs include the Splish Splash hammock bath and Summertime beach hut shower, which whisk you off to an atmosphere of holiday relaxation, and the Good Morning Sunshine flowerpot toilet, which comes complete with a singing bird and a perpetually shining sun.
Bathroom Mania! seeks to change our experience of bath time. Its colourful,illustrative designs are a playful response to the conservative world of bath design. In recent years, the bathroom has blossomed into both a personality and lifestyle statement and a needed retreat. Bathroom Mania!’s innovative products transform the bathroom into a whimsical place where you can relax and drift off into an imaginary world.
“It was very important to me to combine the design aspect I got from my dad, who was an architect and designer, with my major in art school, illustration,” says Van Schijndel.
“I call it ‘illustrative design’.” She says there’s an art to making pieces that stay compelling over time. Illustrative design needs a good, appropriate story, but it shouldn’t spell out the whole plot. Her designs leave room for the viewer’s fantasy, so they stay exciting and new.
