The Satellite Design Challenge is a contest for young Dutch designers. They are invited to make an innovative concept for the interior design of café establishments. This year’s winning entry is a coffee café by Desiree Kerklaan.
Last week the winners of the Satellite Design Challenge were announced. Desiree Kerklaan is the big winner with her design of a flexible coffee café, entitled ‘Look’. The jury characterized it as a compact, original and highly multifunctional design. As a versatile concept it is easily applicable in different sectors of the catering industry.
Currently Desiree Kerklaan studies Interior Architecture at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Later on this year she will go to China in the context of an exchange programme.
Second place was awarded to the ‘B.U.S’ design by Abram de Boer, who this February plans to graduate from TU Delft. As the jury put it, ‘B.U.S. is a simple yet clear and well-developed concept that can actually be applied easily in different cafés or catering establishments. But also – and especially so – in the special events sector.’
Gwendoline Pluim came third with her concept ‘Store-kitchen-restaurant’, which highlights sensory experience (seeing, feeling, smelling and tasting).
The Satellite Design Challenge is geared to young designers. This competition allows them to present their work to professionals in both interior design and the catering industry. The contest’s assignment was ‘to develop an innovative interior design concept for the café sector.’ Young designers from various academies and from different parts of the country participated in the contest.
A full-size model of the winning concept will be built and unveiled at the Venuez Style & Hospitality Event (8 & 9 April) in Amsterdam. Visitors may experience this café for themselves and select a coffee cocktail. Other nominated designs will be exhibited as well.
