This weekend sees the opening of Transnatural, a festival which presents an experience of innovation and a glimpse of the future with art, design, business and scientific examples at the NEMO Science Center in Amsterdam.

Including an exhibition, conference programme and music events, the third edition of Transnatural promises to be bigger and better than ever.

The theme for the third festival is The state of Autonomy. The core question: how can we apply our technological knowledge without infringing upon nature? How far can we push the limits and how can we act within them? The programme focuses on autonomous beings, systems, processes, materials and more that are able to – be they organic, man-made or hybrid – act independently. Will they be able to support our desire to communicate worldwide?

Exhibition:  

Under the theme The state of Autonomy we explore, among other things, generative systems, innovative materials, open-source biotechnology, new ways to harvest energy and the use of existing sources and materials in an intelligent manner.
Featured artists and designers include: Markus Kayser, Tjeerd Veenhoven, Jurema Action Plant by Ivan Henriques, Catalog Tree and Marije Meerman, DA4GA and many more.

Opening weekend 7 and 8 September:

The Music & performance nights at Friday 7 and Saturday 8 September are hosted by the progressive ctm (club transmediale Berlin) and the Amsterdam FIBER Festival. Headliners at Transnatural festival are live The Field (Kompakt records, SE) & Fantastic Mr Fox (Black Acre records, UK). 

Conference 17 and 18 September:

The two day Transnatural conference to be held on 17 and 18 September will be organized in parallel with the PICNIC festival. This year we will explore two topics within the theme The State of Autonomy.

Monday 17 September will be defined by The New Power; the conference will focus on new methods of harvesting energy and food. On the second day the topic Smart as Matter will create the central axis, where new innovative materials and ways in which designers, consumers and businesses cope with existing materials and resources will be the focus.

The conference days are suitable for both the general public and professionals out of the creative, technology and science sectors. The morning and part of the afternoon will consist of talks from speakers representing reputable innovation and technology organizations, scientists, designers and artists. In the afternoon a panel discussion, the Meet & Greet Expo, and workshops will be held.
The conference is coproduced i.c.w. Biotecture.
