Ted Noten’s 7 Necessities For Women

Ted Notens’s survival kit for ladies includes seven essential items that will see her through it all.

By Editor Design.nl / 22-11-2012

“What does every woman needs in a survival kit, under any imaginable circumstance, in order to ‘be her own man’ without forfeiting her femininity,” asks Ted Noten.

The survival kit consists of 7 characteristically feminine necessities, including basic attributes such as a purse, a helmet and a pair of sunglasses, but also exceptional attributes like a chastity belt, a mask, a gun and a traditional ‘Chatelaine’.

Upon closer inspection, none of these objects are what they seem to be at first glance. Highly ingenious systems with secret compartments are used for storing lipsticks or botox, but also to hide nasty weapons.

The objects have been produced by means of rapid prototyping. The decorations are crafted on the computer. Other details, often hidden away in an extending compartment, reveal that Noten has also used traditional materials, including precious gems, silver and gold.

With his mix of basic necessities with unanticipated weapons, and of cheap materials with precious metals, Noten keeps wrong-footing his audiences. The fact that every little detail has been executed with painstaking craftsmanship further contributes to the confusion.

With this challenging project Noten once again defies the rules of the jewel world and enters in an area where art and design meet on communal grounds. He asks many questions, for instance about status symbols, about femininity, and about contemporary life. Apart from this he asks about the status and the locus of craftsmanship. Is it the goldsmith, working on all material details of the design, or is it the designer, seated in front of his computer while drawing his images to be 3D printed with a modern device?

Women on the warpath: they will seduce you with their deadly appeal.

The ‘’7 Necessities’’ are;

Beauty Mask -  this mask is an exact replica of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti (ca. 1350 BC), who was considered a remarkably beautiful woman. Amongst other items it contains Botox to shape the face of the wearer.

Dior 002 Gun, The White Edition - this gun conceals a 4-gigabyte thumb drive for snapshots, personal data and corporate secrets; it also hides a Dior lip-gloss, a sparkling diamond, various white pills and other necessities any worldly woman would like to carry with her.

Chatelaine - in the 18th and 19th century women in charge of their estates wore a decorative clip of long chains holding important household items about the waist, the Chatelaine. With this contemporary take on the chatelaine, the wearer can for instance show off her wealth and status with the credit card fan, one of the 12 different modular items.

Trophy Helmet - this is the ultimate showpiece for a woman on the hunt. It represents both her valuable possessions as well as her resolve to obtain them. She is provided with a variety of tools including a radar device and a telescope.

Chastity Belt - Chastity belts have conflicting connotations. Their primary purpose seemed to reside in preventing women to engage actively in sexual intercourse. However, some use them to create just the opposite impression. This abundantly decorated chastity belt contains many details, such as a valuable gem and a small video device that presents images of the sea.

Purse of Wonders - in need of sperm whale oil, known for its anti-wrinkles properties? One can find the precious substance in the Purse of Wonders, as well as other wonders, such as lipstick, drug paraphernalia, a wedding ring, and a crystal ball to predict the near future.

Glasses for a Woman on the Warpath - these spyglasses are the perfect device for a woman on the warpath. The nylon sunglasses contain many hidden compartments, one of the arms houses an aggressive crystal ice pick. A golden eyebrow completes the story.

“7 Necessities” will be shown for the first time in its entirety at Design Miami/, December 5 – 9.
