Studio Job in Milan

It was a rather surreal experience to see Studio Job's contemporary lighting design placed next to sixteenth century paintings, but somehow it worked.

By Cassandra Pizzey / 18-04-2011

Studio Job was certainly busy during the 50th edition of the Salone del Mobile.

Mainly participating in the various satellite events held all over the city, Job's presence could be felt from Ventura Lambrate to the city centre in the form of their Gothic Chair designed for Moooi, which had been placed in strategic point around the city.

To celebrate their thirteenth year in Milan, Studio Job showed their work at five different locations this year, including at Moooi and the Elle Deco awards. For Lensvelt this year the duo had designed a piece of office furniture somewhat reminiscent of a vault. The large cabinet with an industrial look and feel, featured a huge yet functional bronze key, proving - together with the wide range of available colours - that industrial mass production and a personal object can become one.

Over at the Italian carpet firm Nodus, two designs from the Book of Job were made into rugs. Both 'Panthéon' and 'The Birth' were beautifully executed by the Milanese and a third design, Perished Persian, was honoured with and Elle Decoration International Style Award.

But it was at the Museo Bagatti Valsecchi where the design studio's work seemed to come to its own. Standing between objects from the 15th to the 19th century, Job's latest collection for Venini named Mae West & Arnolfini seemed to completely steel the show. Six lamps were on show - together forming a three dimensional tromple l'oeil - executed in monochromatic colours in Murano glass. The various shapes depictions of Studio Job icons such as the candleholder, coffee pot, and vasem supplemented by new forms such as a head, a hat and of course, the exquisite female breasts that also adorn the Job Lounge at the Groninger museum.
