SPACES
Using their trademark building blocks of irregular grids or 'genetic codes' EventArchitectuur created their first furniture series which has been seven years in the making.
Since 1993, EventArchitectuur - Herman Verkerk and Paul Kuipers - have been active in Dutch design industry creating temporary and permanent installations for exhibitions, retail and residential and commercial interiors. Major recent projects include installations for the Arnhem Fashion Biennial, Design Academy Eindhoven exhibition Milan 2009, Ideal House Cologne for Hella Jongerius and more.
In 2010, the duo presents their first furniture collection SPACES based on a series of modular libraries, desks and shelves first launched in 2003. The objects were based on the idea of the cross-section and questioned the relationship between an object and the surrounding space.
Using a system of modules of varying widths and heights corresponding to the sizes of various objects - e.g. books 220mm, CD 195mm, magazines 310mm - laid out in a vertical or horizontal format, a furniture unit can be custom-designed. The characteristic modularity can be further seen in the furniture in the interiors of Coming Soon Arnhem, NL= New Luxury for Orson+Bodil and Francisco van Benthum, Warmoesmarkt, Artimo and Antimarres book stores and Studio Piet Paris. These modules or building blocks contain the 'genetic code' which allows the user to create his or her own interpretation according to their needs, tailor-made to each space. Visually, the playful irregular rhythm of voids varies accordingly with the function of each unit.
This first series of prototypes comprises storage/shelving installations, desks, lighting objects each with their own interpretation and expression of the genetic code. All handmade from birch plywood and oak wood. SPACES was developed in collaboration with Tal Erez. The collection was recently exhibited at Tuttobene in Milan and is now on show at VIVID Rotterdam from 25 April until 27 June 2010.
