Schiphol airport announces design contest
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is organising an international contest for the design of a sound barrier.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is organising an international contest for the design of a sound barrier, to be built parallel to Runway 18R-36L (Polderbaan). The aim of this project is to achieve a reduction in ground noise by at least 7 decibels. The barrier must present an innovative solution for the complex problem of ground noise in Hoofddorp-Noord produced by aircraft taking off from Runway 18R-36L. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has already had a number of plans drawn up for the noise-reduction facility, including structures in the form of pyramids. Design contest participants will be challenged to come up with better designs.
Design agencies, businesses, universities and private persons have until 5 June to enter. The application form and competition rules can be downloaded from the website. The winning design will be awarded a prize of € 750,000, with € 1,250,000 in prize money to be distributed in total.
The designs will be assessed by a jury, which will consist of the Schiphol Group Board of Management, Ms H.M. Blank, director of BVR Spatial Development Consultancy, Prof. H.A.J. Henket, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol supervisor, Mr W.M. Crouwel, architect, and Mr A.J.A. Uiterhoeve of the Municipality of Haarlemmermeer. The winning design will be announced on 23 January 2009.
