“Ruilen” is an exhibition and series of events. During a period of two months, Mediamatic Fabriek will be transformed into an arena where people can swap goods, objects and services.

Massages, books, Nordic sweaters, self portraits, toys, clothes, seeds, music, food, repair services and homes: we're swapping it all.

Ruilen [rœylə(n)] 
What do you need and what would you like to exchange for something else? “Ruilen” is an exhibition in Mediamatic Fabriek where visitors can swap their haves, time and talents. Your shoes don’t fit? Still got some toys you’re too old for? A lonely sock that needs a companion? Or would you rather trade a service, like a massage? And what about cutting someone’s hair or getting a new haircut? The exhibition also contains art projects from divergent artists with an interest in no monetary exchanges, with different takes on what swapping can be. In the framework of her ongoing project “What if I take your place?”, Lina Issa asks you to exchange your life with her for a short time. Dancers Maria Mavridou and Sayaka Akitsu create spontaneous and unexpected performances in the exhibition space, inspired by visitors and the theme of the exhibition, whereas “Time Divisia”, a longterm project and exchange between prisoners from Mexico City and the Mexican artist Antonio Vega Macotela, shows a more conditioned situation in which no monetary exchanges takes place.

Throughout the exhibition period, we are organizing extensive swap-events on each Sunday afternoon. The first event will be in collaboration with Ruilplein, and takes place on Sunday October 21 from 14.00 - 17.00. You can swap and trade literally anything here, without using money of course. On November 4 we will swap seeds, and hold on to your unwanted Christmas presents, because you can trade them at a special event during our exhibition. The opening party of “Ruilen” is on Saturday October 20 at 20.00 with music by DJ Baba Electronica. Please bring your stuff you’d like to swap. Take a look on our website to see a list of goods that we swap.

“Ruilen” takes place from October 21 till January 6. Opening times: Wednesday until Sunday from 14.00 to 19.00. Entrance: 5,- (for four weeks), children half price, free for members. You can find Mediamatic Fabriek inside the Van Gendthallen, VOC-Kade 10, Oostenburgereiland, Amsterdam.
