Richard Hutten, 18 years of playing
Design museum Gent will host an extensive retrospective of the work of Richard Hutten, designed by the eccentric designer himself.
Rotterdam-based Richard Hutten (born 1967) is one of the most well-known and unconventional Dutch designers.
He graduated in 1991 from the Design Academy in Eindhoven and fairly quickly garnered international recognition. In his own design studio he produced designs for furniture, products, interiors and exhibitions. Some familiar products include the Domoor (Dumbo) cup, Sexy Relaxy chair, Zzzidt objects, Bronto and Berlage chair. In 2008, Hutten's label was integrated into Gispen as part of their new design brand NGispeN for which he is creative director.
Hutten is a conceptual designer but his designs are highly functional, each and every one of them. Often the object will even have multiple functions. His level-headed designs are playful and humorous, but they are still well-thought-out, down to the smallest detail. Accordingly, Richard Hutten’s principal tenet is No Sign of Design.
Design museum Gent gave Hutten the assignment to design his own exhibition entitled 'Richard Hutten, 18 years of playing'. Those who know Hutten will know to expect the unexpected.
