Italian furniture manufacturer Natuzzi has commissioned fashion designer Percy Irausquin to design a leather dress, using leather normally used for making furniture.

Natuzzi has given the commission to Irausquin in recognition of the many similarities between his approach and theirs, and to generate publicity.

Natuzzi plans to open ten shops in the Netherlands. Its new design project is called Italian Design meets Dutch Design. Natuzzi was founded in 1959 by Pasquale Natuzzi. The company puts more than a hundred new couches and sofas on the market every year.

As part of the cooperative project with the furniture company, Irausquin will design the dress and also give classes at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. The classes will give young talent the opportunity to develop their skills. Natuzzi has made 21 animal hides available as part of the project. The choice of art school was up to Irausquin, who decided on the Rietveld Academy because he himself had studied there.

The creations of the students will be exhibited during their end-of-year shows, after which they will be shown at various Natuzzi shops in the Netherlands. What will happen to the dress designed by Irausquin has not been announced.
