Papabubble II
What do you get when you mix Spanish sweet makers, a Japanese architect and an Amsterdam retail space? A sweet shop with a difference, that’s for sure.
A warm yet minimalist space greets visitors to Papabubble II, the second sweet shop of its kind in Amsterdam. Bare walls, old-fashioned cabinets, open storage and visible worktops are all features adding to the interior, one not usually associated with a sweet shop.
You won’t find neon colours, at this sweet shop opposite Droog, not provided by the interior at least. Instead the shop wants to be transparent, visible to its neighbors yet blending in with its environment. At the shop, visitors can see live-action candy making, an entertaining treat and only adding to the shop’s artisinal aesthetic.
Glass is a central theme at Papabubble II, during the day reflecting its surroundings and at night becoming almost invisible. Thanks to the glass, passers-by can see from the store window right back to the courtyard.
The interior was designed by the Japanese architect Yusuke Seki, responsible for multipuple Papabubble shops spanning the globe. Playing on an inside outside theme, the walls at the shop were kept bare, as if exposed to the elements. Other Japanese features such as open storage and sliding doors fuse with the otherwise Dutch architecture of the building.
