The legendary New York hotel the Plaza is now host to Marlies Dekkers' first American shop, more a lingerie boudoir.
Lingerie is a woman's best friend, credit crunch or no credit crunch.
Lingerie designer Marlies Dekkers opened her first store in the U.S. at the newly revamped Plaza New York. Infamous with celebrities, the hotel is a legendary Manhattan institution where it was described as "nothing unimportant happens at the Plaza".
Marlies Dekkers’ new store in the new luxury retail development at the Plaza that forms part of the hotel’s 400USD million dollar renovation scheme. The 35 plus boutiques are housed in the Edwardian Room and Grand Concourse of the hotel, located on 5th Avenue across from Central Park. Alongside marlies|dekkers are stores such as the French publisher Assouline and the Austrian confectioner Demel.
"This whole new American adventure started off with the Las Vegas Wynn Hotel offering to enrich its Black Satin lingerie boutique with my designs. Then the New York Plaza Hotel asked me to become part of their Retail Collection with my own flagship store. A true honour! It has always been a dream of mine to continue my small lingerie revolution in America", Marlies Dekkers explains.
The designer has added her personal touch to the 140-square-metre store, with the wallpaper, lighting, furnishings and fixtures. The wallpaper is signature marlies|dekkers; an over-scale furnishing design recreated with fairies, jazz-playing minstrels and lace patterned hearts. A passion red section mixes this dramatic wallpaper with bold stripes. A cooler grey area contrasts with the red.
Is Dekkers concerned about opening a new shop in the States at a time when many retailers are having severe financial problems? "I don’t believe that the economy will directly affect the lingerie industry. An inspiring story and a true fact is that there’s never been as many stockings (nylons) purchased as during World War 2! This shows that even in difficult times women don’t moderate their lingerie spending. It is a special treat and I believe it will remain so".
The New York store brings the marlies|dekkers store total to twelve; six in the Netherlands, plus Paris, Antwerp, Berlin, Cologne and Bangkok.
"I’m crazy about hotels and the secrets and stories they can tell. And what better place to start than the New York Plaza if you want to conquer America? Here, I feel a little like Eloise (the fictional resident at the Plaza), a plucky little girl in the big wide world… I am Marlies. I am forty-three. I am a city child. I have a store at the Plaza."
