The old Central library on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam will be turned into a meeting place for the creative sector. Marcel Wanders is working on a plan that means the old library will house a museum, cafe, design hotel, studios and workshops.

The designer will be working with the real estate agent Aedes, who bought the property. The designer hopes that all the permits will be ready this year, so that work can begin in 2009 followed by an opening in 2010. Currently Wanders is working with Aedes on the development of the Westerhuis in the Jordaan, a former school which is being converted into a office for the creative industry.

The City Centre borough of Amsterdam and deputy mayor Carolien Gehrels support the initiative, which fits in with the promotion of Amsterdam as a creative city. Wanders said 'Creativity is the key to the future for Amsterdam. By realising this project we hope to increase the creative potential of the city'.
