Jan Taminiau A/W 2010
Luckily, the pouring rain didn't manage to dampen the spirits of fashion-lovers who were coming to the opening of the Amsterdam International Fashion Week (AIFW). Their main mission: to get a glimpse of the new A/W 2010 collection of one of the country's favourite fashion designers Jan Taminiau.
JANTAMINIAU was the opening show of the 12th edition of AIFW as part of the Fortis Bank Soiree. Starting one hour late, the show didn't disappoint: his collection of 20 new pieces presented a glittering show inspired by fantasy and sculptural form.
The theme of the collection centred around a contrast between protection and exposure played out in a fantasy, mystical atmosphere. The collection comprised mainly mini dresses and several Grecian-style draped dresses, ending with a stunning pale blue evening dress and a draped bridal gown. Structure, silhouette and the combination of fabrics played an integral role: heavier antique hand-woven Chinese fabrics and embroidered fabric were used in more dominant, sculptural forms in contrast with freeflowing tuile.
Features of the female body were accentuated: strong shoulders and slender necks enveloped in collars that extended into headpieces. Fabric ruffles and oversized rosettes adorned the dresses while exquisitely embroidered fabric with paillettes and sequins stole the show. A muted palette of shimmering nudes and pale blues set the stage for the gold and metallics to shine. One last thing the audience won't forget in a hurry: given the extreme height of the sky-high platform heels (without heels) the audience were definitely happy they weren't literally standing in the model's shoes.
