Irma Boom exhibition and book design for Museum of Design Zürich
The Museum of Design Zürich has invited celebrated book designer Irma Boom to design a book about the collections of the museum, and has organised an accompanying exhibition around her work.
The Museum für Gestaltung Zürich invited Irma Boom to design the book “Every Thing Design”, about the collections of the museum. The result is a true design object, which invites readers on a journey of discovery, with more than 800 pages on the important holdings of the museum's poster, design, applied art, and graphics Collections.
On the occasion of this collaboration, the museum organised an exhibition of Irma Boom’s work in its Plakatraum that provides insight into her wide-ranging experimental work and such specific aspects of it as the structure of the books, her approach to color, and the relationship of content and typography. She herself says of her work: “I honour the traditional book but do not want to stop there. My ambition is to develop the significance and the limits of the book. Structures that come from new media, the way text and images are treated, have given the book a new impulse. It is important to experiment and not to be afraid sometimes to create utter failures; the book can keep its vitality. There is a lot to explore in a technical way and, even more importantly, in terms of content and form.”
