Common sense, folklore, color, intelligent use of material and decoration: in this special exhibition MIND-SETS currently showing at the Museum of Modern Art Arnhem, international designer Ineke Hans (1966) shows her sources of inspiration and what motivates her work.

The independent-minded Ineke Hans has definite opinions about the role of the designer in today’s world. New products should be designed only if they really contribute something; this idea relates to her emphasis on durability and sustainability. MIND-SETS demonstrates clearly how Ineke Hans interprets traditional Dutch tea pots, candlesticks, chairs, and tables, and gives them a modern spin. The exhibition is a journey of discovery through Dutch traditions translated into contemporary design, and it also illustrates the creative associative process of this international designer originally from Arnhem. She explains: “my interests include both new and traditional materials and techniques, common sense, folklore, color, and the intelligent use of material and decoration.”

After studying 3D design at the Arnhem Academy of the Arts (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem), Ineke Hans earned a Master’s degree in furniture design at the Royal College of Art in London. In England she worked for Habitat UK for a few years, but moved back to Arnhem in 1998 to set up her own studio, INEKEHANS/ARNHEM. Ineke Hans designs furniture and other products for the Dutch brands Ahrend, Arco, Royal VKB and Lensvelt, the Italian brand Cappellini, and her own brand INEKE HANS/ARNHEM, amongst others. Her contemporary designs are presented in combination with authentic utensils from the collections of the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum, the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem and the Historisch Museum Arnhem.

During the exhibition, guests can relax in the museum café on picnic benches, swings, and chaises longues designed by Ineke Hans. Her new chair for Ahrend and hat rack for Van Esch, which will only be officially introduced in October, can already be tried out at the exhibition. And of course the soups, salads, and sandwiches are served on pieces designed by Ineke Hans. Items designed by Ineke Hans are for sale with a 10% discount at the museum shop. At the same time the publication MIND-SETS by Walter Bettens - editor DAMn° Magazine - and Ineke Hans will be launched at the exhibition.
