Once again Kossmann.dejong has received an IDEA award, this time for the permanent exhibition at Rotterdam’s Laurens church.

Amsterdam-based design agency Kossmann.dejong has scooped up an award at the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA).

The permanent exhibition De Laurenskerk; een monument vol verhalen (Laurens chuch; a monument filled with stories) was given a Silver Award in the Environments category.

IDEA is considered one of the leading international design competitions. This year the organisation received over 2000 applications from 39 countries, a record number since the competition was launched 31 years ago. The Industrial Designers Soceity of America (IDSA) will hand out the IDEA Awards on 17 September, during their 2011 International Cnference in New Orleans.

Laurens church; a monument filled with stories is a unique exhibition. Never before has a project like it been executed in a church or monument in the Netherlands. The design is based on stories embedded within the building. The exhibition taps into a history of over five centuries, from the founding of the city, throughout the centuries and into the future.

It is not an exhibition in the traditional sense, because there is no collection to display. Stories and occasions are depicted and displayed. The contemporary multi-media presentation does justice to the building and offers clarification and in-depth knowledge to both the local community and tourists. This mode of exhibition design shows a new approach to giving monuments a new lease of life as carriers of our history.
