The assignment of this year’s Hema Design Competition was ‘Design the new Hema hero.’ This competition, the 20th, invited students and customers to participate. They were asked to apply their creativity to the hardware and fashion categories, as well as to a new category, food.

Hardware
Nearly 700 Dutch and Belgian students of product design submitted ideas in the hardware category. Some 212 of them also submitted designs. There were 481 submissions by customers. In the hardware category, Annet Hennink won the first prize in the student competition with her disposable tart bottom, Tast Toe! The jury said its presentation of the popular Hema tarts in a trendy way in a way fitting to the festive character of this year’s competition made it the clear winner. Second prize was awarded to the Qwiktape dispenser by Derk Reilink. This is a slim sticky tape holder with an attractive design, the jury said. The third prize went to Marlies Vermeulen for her lamp design Elan. The basic character of this design appealed to the jury tremendously. There were also five honourable mentions in this category. First prize in the customers’ competition went to the Bagyard by Hetty Peeters. The jury described this flexible plant container of artificial canvas as a real wannahave.
