Fashion designer Sheguan Hu wins prize
Fashion designer Sheguan Hù has been awarded the Victoria Promotion Prize 2007.
For the last eight years, the Victoria Promotion Prize has been awarded to a person or organisation putting the city of Doetinchem in the news in an original way. The jury said that the designer deserved the prize because he had very successfully put the city ‘on the map”. Hù, who is of Chinese origin, recently made international news because he will be designing the clothes that will be worn during the opening of the Olympic Games this summer in China.
Hu was thirteen when he began studying at the art academy in Beijing. Four years later, having gained his diploma, he went to the Netherlands, where he did a Master’s degree in oil painting. He then went to the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, and established his own label, HU Fashion, while still a student. He now sells his designs in his HU Fashion Lounge in Doetinchem. He has worked on a variety of TV programmes. In 2007 he designed and made the clothes for the show The Soul of Motown.
Hu hopes to make a name for himself in his country of origin, China. In 2007 the Chinese government invited him to present a fashion show during government festivities. In April this year he opened his second Hu Fashion lounge, in the Chinese capital, Beijing.
