On 29 November the Dutch Foreign Minister for European Affairs, Frans Timmermans announced the logo for the Dutch Design in Madrid Month.
The winner is Jeremie Cornelissen, student at the Design Academy Eindhoven. There were 114 entrants from students at art and design academies throughout Madrid and the Netherlands. The Spanish/Dutch jury chose three nominations and a final winner. The Dutch Design in Madrid Month will take place in March 2008.
The competition asked that the design references both the Netherlands and Spain. Cornelissen achieves this. His design is simple and powerful. The Spanish bull with the Dutch lion has been ingeniously combined. One of the strengths of Dutch design is taking existing symbols and designing them afresh. This logo proves this. The logo also works from a distance and close by, and doesn't need any text to communicate. In short, powerful.
This is the first time so much Dutch design will be on show in Madrid. As well as exhibitions there will be debates held with well known Dutch designers, such as Hella Jongerius and Irma Boom, plus exchange programmes between art and design academies in the Netherlands and Madrid. A Dutch design route along design shops will also be organised.
