Dutch Design Awards Finalists Announced

Which are the best Dutch designs of the past year? Dutch Design Awards (DDA) announces the names of the finalists of the 11th edition. 27 designs are competing for the Awards, divided into three main categories: Communication, Product and Spatial. The winners will be chosen by an international jury and announced at the official award ceremony on Saturday 19 October during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. The works of all winners and finalists are exhibited in a special exhibition until October 27.

According to the chairmen of the selection committees - Hans van der Markt (category Spatial), Antoine Achten (category Communication) and Joost Alferink (category Product) - the quality of the work remains as high as ever. This year, the committees again assessed well over 650 projects. Despite the continuing crisis and limited resources, Dutch designers still seem to be able to come up with surprising concepts.

TRENDS
The selection committees noticed diverse trends. Socially responsible design remains a topical theme. It is striking, however, that the contestants always keep a visually appealing end product in mind. Designers are increasingly focused on cross-sectoral collaborations. The selection committee of the category Product said the following about this topic, “This is what we want to see in the world: designers working together”. These collaborative projects show the way to the future. The function of the design is more and more often becoming the first priority again. In general, it is found that as disciplines fade, it becomes increasingly difficult to categorise projects.

DUTCH DESIGN AWARDS
DDA are internationally renowned awards for the very best products in the field of Dutch design. Together, the award ceremony, the exhibition of the work of all finalists during Dutch Design Week, and the publication of the Dutch Design Yearbook in collaboration with nai010 publishers, form a platform for Dutch design across the spectrum of its disciplines. Dutch Design Awards are awarded in the three main categories Product, Spatial and Communication. Special prizes are the MINI Young Designer Award (incentive prize for young talent), Future Concept Award (for designs that show the way to the future), the Best Client Award, and the BNO Piet Zwart Prize - lifetime achievement award, i.e. the DDA oeuvre award. The Golden Eye Award is for the most successful design of the last year. Who the finalists are in these categories will be announced at a later stage. DDA is produced by Capital D.
