Nine Designers of Today have been asked to give their vision on the Design of the Future in a new biennial design series hosted by ArtFort Asperen, with the first edition curated by Tuttobene.

This summer ArtFort Asperen will present the exhibition DNKTNK, or think tank (denktank) from 6 June until 30 September 2010. This exhibition is the first instalment in the Design Biennial series that ArtFort Asperen will be organizing from 2010 in collaboration with various high-profile guest curators. First up is Tuttobene, the design platform that has successfully presented sustainable design and up-and-coming Dutch talent abroad since 2004.

DNKTNK offers an overview of the latest developments in design and uncovers current design processes that underlie contemporary design practices. DNKTNK demonstrates how susceptible the design profession is to change. Ongoing economic and ecological insights lead to new design strategies. Designers break new ground; products are realized in unconventional ways. This new approach has its own design language. In the final result the context in which the object originated is often explicitly visualized.

During DNKTNK, Tuttobene will present the work of nine designers: Bernotat & Co, Lotte van Laatum, Christien Meindertsma, Joana Meroz & Stefaan Vervoort, Nikola Nikolov, Damian O’Sullivan, Bo Reudler, Celia Sluijter and Arnout Visser. Through the exhibited works, insight is provided into the design process. In this way, DNKTNK presents the view of contemporary designers on the future of design and the future of our living environment.

In June, several lectures and workshops related to the exhibition will take place. Special mention should be made of Henk Hofland’s project ‘Atelier Hofland’ that presents a workshop for eight- to eighty-eight- year-olds in which the design process is reduced to its most rudimentary form. The starting point is Hofland’s own design bible Rederij Hofland that was published by De Bezige Bij in 2008.

ArtFort Asperen is one of the circular tower forts that are part of the New Dutch Waterline, a network of defences built in the nineteenth century. Strangely enough the stronghold along the Linge didn’t experience its baptism of fire during a hostile raid that never happened, but rather in the summer of 1984, when fort Asperen was included in the high-profile outdoor exhibition ‘Statues along the Linge. From 1986 the bastion has housed an annual multidisciplinary art show put together by renowned guest curators such as Rudi Fuchs, Walter Maiolo, Anna Tilroe, Peter Greenaway, Lidewij Edelkoort and Ben van Berkel to name but a few. DNKTNK is now adding Tuttobene to this illustrious list.

Made possible with support of the communities of Geldermalsen and Lingewaal.
