Scientists and students at the Technical University of Delft have started work on an idea for an aircraft that will be much more environmentally friendly. The aircraft will probably also have quite different characteristics to the ones we know today.
The Aviation and Space Travel faculty intends to develop the new aircraft within four years and thinks that the end result may look very different to the current generation of aircraft. Some suggestions are that it will have no head or tail, or that it might be in the form of a dish or a boomerang, or that it will be ellipsoid.
The development of the new aircraft is intended to provide new insights into aerodynamics, materials research, and other technical disciplines. The researchers who will work on the project will be led by eight professors. Around 20 students will also be involved on a permanent basis. The result of the four years research work will be a prototype design. If it is successful, an actual aircraft based on the design might be in the skies by around 2020.
