De Architect Awards
Two awards were recently presented in the Lichtfabriek, Haarlem by the magazine design de Architect.
From five nominated entries, NEXT Architects won the Lensvelt de Architect Interieurprijs with the interior of the Wieden+Kennedy office. The office is located on the Herengracht in Amsterdam inside two historic six-storey buildings that previously lacked vertical connections. The new interior is characterised by three glass shafts that pierce through the building to create visual connection and transparency between the floors. The programme also includes a small theatre for screenings, studios for audiovisual productions, a gym with a floor made out of recycled Nike shoes, a penthouse with a bar and roof garden and a large garden with basketball facilities. The jury for this award consisted of Liesbeth van der Pol (Rijksbouwmeester, Dok architecten), Petra Blaisse (Inside Outside), Ronald Hooft (prasthooft), Mariet Schoenmakers (AM Wonen), Wieki Somers (Studio Wieki Somers), Ivo Vanhamme (BOB361 architecten) and Harm Tilman (editor-in-chief de Architect). The prize money was 12 000 euros.
Presented by Thonet and De Architect, the second annual Mart Stampprijs for the best chair design was awarded to Alexander Pelikan for his design Plastic Nature. The concept fuses hand made timber furniture with injection moulded furniture where plastic resin is cast into the wooden frame. Where the two materials meet, a unique joint results from the drying of the plastic as it flowed into the timber. Pelikan received 5000 euros in prize money. The jury consisted of Diederik Fokkema (Fokkema Architecten), Richard Hutten (Richard Hutten Studio), Arjen Ribbens (NRC-Handelsblad) and Harm Tilman (de Architect).
