The exhibition BULLETPROOF ARTIST examines the relationships between art, democracy and security.

By Editor Design.nl / 10-09-2010

For the exhibition 'Bulletproof Artist' at Kunsteyssen, fashion duo KARSSENBERG / GREIDANUS designed a series of garments out of bulletproof material.

The pieces were made for artist Jonas Staal who had an artist-in-residence placement in Johannesburg South Africa, in July and August this year together with writer and philosopher Vincent van Gerven Oei.

Through the series of garments, Staal and KARSSENBERG / GREIDANUS explore  the paradoxical nature of the security industry and the feeling of safety of the wearer themselves. Subtly used in the detailing and at the outer seams, the normally hidden bullet proof material - which has a bright yellow neon-like color - becomes highly visible. The details increase the value of clothing as an exclusive, fetish object. The collection consists of pants, shirts, a sweater, jacket, vest and scarf.

The exhibition of bulletproof clothing at the KunstEyssen will be presented alongside projections of photographs that give an impression of Staal's stay in Johannesburg. In addition, the exhibition shows film footage involving the use of security equipment. The exhibition includes a free publication featuring photographs and a written reflection by Van Gerven Oei which outlines how the project 'Bulletproof Artist' functions in a socially and politically charged context such as Johannesburg.
