Benno Wissing, painter, graphic designer, architect, industrial designer and one of the founders of Total Design in 1963, died on 7 January 2008.
Wissing worked at Total Design until the beginning of the 1970s and was responsible for a number of thought- provoking designs for names such as PAM, SHV, Holland Festival, Makro, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and the signposting system still used at Schiphol Airport today. After leaving Total Design in 1980 he accepted a professorial position at the Rhode School of Design in the United States.
Managing Director of Total Design, Hans P Brandt said "He was a striking figure and captivating person. Wissing laid the foundations for the work we do today. He is still immensely valuable to our bureau, and is of great importance for the Dutch design world. He was a great conceptual thinker and a revolutionary in his field. It is a great loss."
