Bag Museum moves
The Hendrickje Bag Museum has moved to a historic building in the centre of Amsterdam. It was officially opened by Mayor Job Cohen last week.
The museum reflects the history of the Western bag from the late Middle Ages (16th century) to the present. The museum's collection includes more than 3,500 bags, pouches, cases, purses and accessories. It is one of the few museums with such a wide and specialised collection of bags.
The museum began with the private collection of Hendrikje Ivo, who collected bags for more than 30 years. What started as a personal fascination developed into an extensive collection that was on show for 10 years at the museum s previous location in Amstelveen.
In addition to the historical collection, the museum regularly puts on themed (historical) exhibitions. It also stimulates designers from the Netherlands and abroad by organizing exhibitions of their work and by selling their bags at the museum and web shops.
The museum will be presenting the 'On the Amsterdam Canals' exhibition from 10 June until 16 September 2007. This exhibition gives an overview of the exhibitions of the work of bag designers that the museum has organized over the last ten years.
