On Friday El Hema will open in Amsterdam, an Arabic verison of the traditional Dutch store Hema, this time with halal sausage, headscarves and North African wine.

On Friday El Hema will open in Amsterdam, an Arabic verison of the traditional Dutch store Hema, this time with halal sausage, headscarves and North African wine.

Also on the opening day the symposium Khatt, Kufi and Kaffia will be held, with the theme contemporary Arabic visual culture. Five new Arabic fonts will be presented, designed from a cooperation between Dutch and Arabic typographers organised by the Khatt Foundation. The book Typographical Matchmaking, in which Huda Abifares describes the multicultural cooperation that led to the new letters will also be presented. From 24 August 2007 the public can take part in the El Hema design competition. Every week Mediamatic will nominate the best ideas which will be on show in the exhibition. During MuseumNight on 3 November 2007 there will be an awards ceremony for the design competition. El Hema is open until 4 November 2007.
