Amsterdam Public Library exhibits HEMA design
Every year, hundreds of Belgian and Dutch students take up challenge to make a successful design for the HEMA Design Competition. This year, the Dutch chain of department stores organized the competition for the 22nd time. The assignment was: “Design a product by reusing existing articles, forms or materials or giving them a new application. In brief: ‘old is new’.” The assignment led to more than 240 creative ideas over the last few months.
Since 8 September, the Amsterdam Public Library gives visitors a peek into HEMA’s design process. In addition to sixty designs from the design competition, the exhibition also shows the design process for various HEMA products, for example, HEMA for Rijksmuseum and the Return to Sender collection. Displays show the choices made by HEMA designers when it comes to colour, design and look. The design exhibition is spread over four floors of the Amsterdam Public Library and can be seen until 31 October 2009. The library is open to the public every day from 10 am to 10 pm.
